5 common challenges when caring for aging loved ones
Caring for aging loved ones can be challenging, time-consuming, confusing, and expensive. These are the most common challenges I help clients overcome:
Difficult housing decisions
Should they stay or go? Is it safe? Will they be happier? Can they afford it? It is hard to know where to start when evaluating aging in place or moving. I guide you through the process and connect you to trusted, local resources.
Challenging health issues
Many older adults face physical, cognitive, and emotional health challenges. I help families find the right local providers, obtain and follow home health care plans, and manage hospital discharges.
Lacking social support and challenging family dynamics
Older adults suffer without the right social support. I coach you to have productive family meetings, define and focus on shared goals, and cultivate the right engagement for your aging loved ones.
Risky or incomplete legal plans
Legal costs and estate planning can be intimidating. I ensure you understand the details, collaborate effectively with your attorney, avoid probate, understand your loved one’s wishes, and protect your assets.
Not having a clear financial plan
Rising care costs and confusing insurance options can be overwhelming. I provide guidance, resources, and referrals to financial service providers.
Whatever challenges your family is experiencing, you do not have to face them alone. I work with you to find clarity, confidence, and practical strategies, so you feel more in control and create a smoother path for your whole family.
Why I do this work
Hi! I’m Ian.
My caregiving journey began in 2014, when I helped care for my mother until her passing in 2016. I then began to care for both my sister and father, navigating the challenges of their growing needs. When my sister unexpectedly passed away in 2018, my focus shifted entirely to my father, whose care became increasingly complex until he passed in 2023. I oversaw his move to assisted living, managed his finances, and became his advocate through many medical crises.
For nearly a decade, I balanced the heavy weight of caregiving, grief, and maintaining my own life. My experiences taught me the value of clear priorities, trusted resources, a compassionate support system, and the ability to adapt to life’s ever-changing circumstances.
Today, I guide families with older adults to:
Have meaningful conversations to foster understanding and define shared family goals.
Preserve relationships with loved ones through collaboration and compassion.
Optimize resources with careful planning and informed decisions.
Spend time wisely by focusing on what truly matters.
Caring for one or more older loved ones is challenging, but it is also an opportunity to create deeper connections and avoid future regrets. I am here to make the experience more manageable and meaningful for you.
